The Royal Mail announced today that a new set of commemorative stamps is to be launched. The new stamps are designed to celebrate the 50th representative for the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest!

“Following the success of the recent Royal Mail commemorative stamp issue featuring the Beatles, it has been decided to continue the theme of ‘Great British Popular Music Culture.’ Eurovision has been selected for the second in this series, to showcase 50 entries for the UK. In addition, it is appropriate that this year’s EUROPA mark will be featured on both the first and second-class stamps within this issue. This commemorative issue will be available from May 24th.”
The above statement is taken from the Royal Mail Press Release - 01/04/07.
This gets the Melodimen’s stamp of approval!
The stamps will feature:
21p Nicki French
32p Cheryl Baker and Jay Aston
64p Sonia
72p Brotherhood of Man
£1.12 Katrina (without the waves)
It seems surprising that Sir Cliff, Lulu and Sandie Shaw, to name but a few, have not been chosen, apparently this is due to legal and financial reasons. A special concession has been made to include Katrina Leskanich - despite being American, because she was the last UK winner in 1997.
Naturally, we would like to see Sally-Ann Triplett and Carrie Grant completing the set! The date of release is to coincide with the first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 – do the Royal Mail not realise the UK didn’t enter until 1957?!
A special First Day Cover will be released with a limited-edition post mark to be issued from; Birmingham, Brighton, Edinburgh, Harrogate and London.
A presentation pack and a set of stamp postcards will also be available for collectors!
Who knows will the Post Office have to issue an additional stamp featuring Scooch – winners 2007! At least we could stick it on our Scooch Lunchbox!
